5G researchers achieve record speeds of 1 Tbps

Tech News  - Researchers at the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) managed speeds of one terabit per second (Tbps) - thousands of times faster than current data connections.

At 1Tbps, it would be theoretically possible to download a file 100 times the size of a feature film in about three seconds.

The speed is more than 65,000 times faster than average 4G download speeds, 'BBC News' reported.

Previously, Samsung Electronics has set 5G speed record at 7.5Gbps, which is less than 1 per cent of the Surrey team's speed.

"We have developed 10 more breakthrough technologies and one of them means we can exceed 1Tbps wirelessly. This is the same capacity as fibreoptics but we are doing it wirelessly," 5GIC director Professor Rahim Tafazolli said.

The tests were conducted in lab conditions over a distance of 100m, according to news website V3.

Motorcycle maker Yamaha to launch small cars in Europe

Auto News - The firm has been mulling manufacturing four-wheel vehicles for years, exhibiting a prototype 1,000 cc engine car and an electric-car battery at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.

Yamaha is planning to build car plants in Europe to sell them in the region before 2020, the company spokesman said, without elaborating.

"As small cars are already prevalent in Europe, our first car launch will be (there)," he said.

"But we are also studying opportunities in emerging countries" as well, he added.

His comments were in response to an interview with company chief Hiroyuki Yanagi that appeared in the leading Nikkei business daily, in which he said Yamaha will supply its own engines for the new European market cars, while outsourcing some other parts production.

While it is best known for its motorcycles, Yamaha has worked with Toyota on car engine development since the mid-sixties, supplying more than three million engines to the world's biggest automaker over that period.

Google rolls out Lollipop update for Android One phones

Auto News - An official Google+ post by Google vice president of  product management Caesar Sengupta said, “Lollipop rollout has begun for a small number of phones in India and will gradually roll out to others.”

“This is a gradual process and so each week we’ll push the OTA update to more phones selected at random (pro-tip: connecting over WiFi will increase your odds),” he wrote.

Three different Android One phones produced by Micromax, Karbonn and Spice last year had reportedly struggled to make good sales in the country.

These Android One phones were at first available online but when not registered good sales, was made available in all retailers across India. Major retailers, however, refused to stock these phones.

Lollipop (5.0 ) is the latest version of mobile operating system for Android smartphones.

The upgradation move by Google can likely increase the chances of Android One phones sale in India.

As of now, Jelly Bean is reportedly the most ascendant OS running on Android One phones, KitKat being the second and Lollipop OS runs only on 1.6 percent devices.

Lenovo website breached; hacker group Lizard Squad claims responsibility

Gadget Reviews India - Hacking group Lizard Squad claimed credit for the attacks on microblogging service Twitter. Lenovo said attackers breached the domain name system associated with Lenovo and redirected visitors to lenovo.com to another address, while also intercepting internal company emails.

Lizard Squad posted an email exchange between Lenovo employees discussing Superfish. The software was at the centre of public uproar in the United States last week when security researchers said they found it allowed hackers to impersonate banking websites and steal users' credit card information.

In a statement issued in the United States on Wednesday night, Lenovo, the world's biggest maker of personal computers, said it had restored its site to normal operations after several hours.

"We regret any inconvenience that our users may have if they are not able to access parts of our site at this time," the company said. "We are actively reviewing our network security and will take appropriate steps to bolster our site and to protect the integrity of our users' information."

Lizard Squad has taken credit for several high-profile outages, including attacks that took down Sony Corp's  PlayStation Network and Microsoft Corp's Xbox Live network last month. Members of the group have not been identified.

Starting 4 p.m. ET (2100 GMT) on Wednesday, visitors to the Lenovo website saw a slideshow of young people looking into webcams and the song "Breaking Free" from the movie "High School Musical" playing in the background, according to technology publication The Verge, which first reported the breach.

The new Moto E will also have a front-facing camera for selfies, though images won't be as sharp as the 5 megapixels on the rear. There's also a model with 4G cellular connectivity. Last year's model was available only for slower, 3G networks.

Motorola, which is headquartered in Chicago, announced its new phone today ahead of next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Samsung, HTC and others are expected to unveil their spring lineups at the show. Sony also announced a budget phone this week for 129 euros (USD 146), though there's no plan to sell it in the US. These four things are the big things

But, WhatsApp that reportedly is the much famous messaging app than others, attracting around 70 million active monthly users, can add another edge to its user base in India with this add-on feature.

Uber introduces India-specific safety features in taxi app

Uber's India app now has a "send status" feature to enable passengers to share ride details with their contacts in real time. The app also has an "SOS" button to call the local police directly.

A spokesman said the functions were the first market-specific safety features launched by Uber. The company also said it plans to launch safety features in other countries soon.

"Safety concerns tend to be unique for each local market. We recognised the demand for these features in India," the spokesman added.

Authorities in New Delhi banned Uber in December following the rape allegations and issued rules that require all taxis to be equipped with a physical panic button.

While the service remains officially banned in Delhi, Uber resumed operations there in January and has since said it has stepped up background checks on all its India drivers. The app is available in several cities.

'CyberCaliphate' hacks Newsweek's Twitter account, threatens Obama

The group, which also took responsibility for hacking  Pentagon social media accounts last month, tweeted "#CyberCaliphate Bloody Valentine's Day #MichelleObama! We're watching you, you girls and your husband!"

The Twitter account showed a head wrapped in a black-and-white scarf next to a banner proclaiming "CyberCaliphate."

The "Je suIS IS" was a reference to the phrase "Je suis Charlie" that emerged last month in support of victims of the attack by Islamic militants on Charlie Hebdo in Paris that killed 12 people.

Newsweek removed the "CyberCaliphate" banner and tweets and regained control of the account within 14 minutes, the magazine said. The Islamic State militant group has seized territory in Iraq and Syria and has declared itself a "caliphate."

The hackers also posted a message intended for the United States in retaliation for its actions in the Muslim world.

"While the U.S. and its satellites are killing our brothers in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, we are destroying your national cybersecurity system from inside," it said.

The message contained a list of names under the heading "brave mujahideen."

Britain gives go-ahead to test driverless cars on roads

Driverless car testing will be restricted to vehicles with a person present and able to take control should the need arise, Britain's Department for Transport (DfT) said.

The DfT said on Wednesday that after carrying out a review into driverless cars, it found there were no legal barriers to the technology being tested on British roads.

It is now working on a code of practice for driverless cars, due to be published in the spring, with vehicles expected to be tested on roads across the country from the summer.

Britain's auto industry has been growing strongly – the value of British car exports has doubled in the past 10 years – and lawmakers hope that driverless car technology could help sustain the sector in the decades to come.

"I want Britain to be at the forefront of this exciting new development, to embrace a technology that could transform our roads and open up a brand new route for global investment," Transport Minister Claire Perry said in a statement.

The driverless car industry globally is expected to be worth about 900 billion pounds ($1.37 trillion) by 2025, according to the UK government, with traditional carmakers such as Daimler vying with technology firms such as Google.

The testing of driverless cars on public roads follows a government investment of 19 million pounds in the technology in four British towns.

Apple planning own search engine to trump Google?

A media report on Monday, referred to an Apple job advertisement posted earlier this month, calling for a professional to develop "a search platform supporting hundreds of millions of users."

This has led to conjecture that the Cupertino, California-based tech giant Apple might be after Google's crown for the undisputed king of online search.

The advertisement has fuelled speculation that Apple was aiming to launch a standalone search tool across iPhones, iPads and Macs, the report said.

Back in 2010, analysts at investment banking and asset management company Piper Jaffray claimed that there was 70 percent chance of Apple launching its own mobile search engine by 2015.

In November last year, the Apple Insider reported that a web-crawling bot (a software application running automated tasks on the internet) was spotted on Apple's servers.

The rumours were bolstered that month when reports claimed that Apple was looking to ditch Google as its default search engine on its Safari browser.

Google has been the default engine on Safari for the past five years, but the deal is due to expire this year. Although this could see Microsoft's Bing or Yahoo taking its place, Apple could also be working to develop a search engine of its own.

Samsung leads India mobile phone market, but losing grip: CMR

According to the latest data from CyberMedia Research (CMR), Samsung is "losing its earlier firm grip" with its share declining to 16.5 percent at the end of December 2014 from 20.3 percent at the beginning of the year.

According to the research firm's India Monthly Mobile Handsets Market Review - for calendar year (CY) 2014, India mobile handsets market grew by 4 percent to 257 million units in terms of shipments over 2013.

Of this, Samsung captured 16.5 percent of the shipments, followed by Micromax and Microsoft (Nokia) at 13.3 percent each, it added.

"However, Samsung was seen to be losing its earlier firm grip on market, as its share of the market showed a downward trend during the year, as compared to Micromax that gained primarily in April-June 2014, but then continued to remain flat during the rest of the year," CMR said in a statement.

Samsung's share of the overall market in January-March 2014 quarter stood at 20.3 percent, while that of Micromax was 11.2 percent and Microsoft (Nokia) was 17.6 percent.

About 77 million smartphones were shipped in 2014, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the total mobile phone market in the country. The smartphones segment grew at 46 percent as against the previous year.

Samsung lost ground in the smartphone segment too, with its market share falling from 43.2 percent at the beginning of the year to 29.3 percent at the end of December 2014.

An app that delivers duplicate keys via post

Now, you can prevent the re-run of that incident with the help of an app. New York-based KeyMe is trying to ease that annoying and costly mistake by changing how we duplicate our keys.

Its iOS app lets users take a photo of their key and upload it to the cloud to print a new one on the fly, reported CNET.

"We've made hundreds of thousands of keys," Michael Harbolt, KeyMe's vice president of marketing, was quoted as saying.

KeyMe has almost two dozen automated locations in the greater New York City area, as well as a few scattered around in states like Florida, Arizona and Arkansas.

All one has to do is take a photograph of their home, office or car key. The app then uploads that image to the company's system. A press of a button tells the app to deliver the key to the user in the mail.

Even easier, one can travel to one of KeyMe's kiosks and have a new key printed in less than a minute.

This context can change your life

If money does not respect human

Google Glass to be redesigned from scratch: Report

Glass is now overseen by Ivy Ross, a jewellery designer who runs Google's smart-eyewear division and Tony Fadell, a former Apple product executive.

"Early Glass efforts have broken ground and allowed us to learn what's important to consumers and enterprises alike," Fadell said in a statement.

"I am excited to be working with Ivy to provide direction and support as she leads the team and we work together to integrate those learnings into future products," the statement read.

The report quotes an adviser to Fadell as saying: "There will be no public experimentation. Tony is a product guy and he's not going to release something until it's perfect."

Google Glass was unveiled as a prototype in 2012. It was distributed to a select group of people as part of Explorer programme who paid $1,500 to be early adopters.

Micromax, on the other hand, expanded its share marginally from 17.5 in January-March 2014 to 18.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Twitter CEO wins breathing room from Wall Street critics

The Internet company said on Thursday that recently launched products and partnerships have set the stage for it to expand its audience.

The optimistic comments, as well as fourth-quarter revenue that topped analyst forecasts, were well received by investors. Twitter's stock jumped 9 percent to $45 in after hours trading.

"The stock is going to be up, because it's probably better than what people expected. But now they have to deliver," said Wedbush Securities analyst Shyam Patil.

"You can't jump on the bandwagon based on the commentary; you've got to see the numbers come through," he said.

Twitter has struggled to grow the number of users on its service, raising questions about whether it can achieve the scale of social network Facebook Inc, which has 1.39 billion users, or even fast-growing messaging and photo apps such as WhatsApp and Instagram.

CEO Costolo is facing mounting criticism on Wall Street, with many analysts and investors frustrated by the company's slow growth and seemingly constant shake-ups in its upper ranks.

Google seals deal with Twitter for tweets in search

Tweets will be visible in Google search results as soon as they are posted. It is likely to start by June. A Google spokeswoman on Thursday confirmed the partnership between the two companies.

Twitter and Google engineers have started working on the project. However, the terms of deal were not disclosed. The tweets will start showing up on Google later this year, according to sources.

Google previously had to crawl Twitter's site for the information, which will now come automatically from Twitter.

Google had a similar arrangement with Twitter back in 2009. Twitter’s feed became a core part of a Google real-time search feature under which it served up fresh content from Twitter and a variety of other sources, including Facebook, Myspace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca.

According to reports, both the cars are  undergoing endurance tests in India wearing partial camouflage, during which both were spied.

2015 Ford Figo hatchback and sedan carry the company’s second generation design philosophy, Kinetic 2.0, which is why the models have resemblance with new Fiesta sedan. With the launch of the new duo, Ford India will have a new-age lineup to beat their respective rivals when it comes to styling and road presence.

Twitter to show tweets in Google search

If sources are to be believed, the social networking site has already signed an agreement with the search engine company. According to the deal, people will now be able to view tweets rather than just profiles of Twitter users when they search on Google.

Google and Twitter had a similar deal from 2009 to 2011 but the agreement has lapsed.

The deal comes as Twitter prepares to reveal the latest statistics on the size of its user base to Wall Street, which has been disappointed by slowing user growth, sending the stock down 37 percent in the last year.

Twitter’s user base is overshadowed by the 1.4 billion users on Facebook and the 300 million on Instagram, owned by Facebook.

Alibaba tests its first drone delivery service

Alibaba's flagship consumer-to-consumer marketplace Taobao, estimated to hold more than 90 per cent of the Chinese market for such transactions, showed off a photo of a black and silver drone with helicopter-like propellers carrying a white box to launch the service.

But the option is confined to just three days and a few areas of three Chinese mega-cities -- the capital Beijing, commercial hub Shanghai and Guangzhou in the south – and applies only to one brand of tea from one particular vendor, with a limit of 450 deliveries in total.

"For consumers... such a cool consumption experience will give them more surprises," Taobao said in a statement on its microblog.

Airspace in China is strictly controlled, with the majority used by the military. The government allows limited use of civil drones for activities ranging from rescue to observation, and operators are required to apply for permission beforehand.

Alibaba said in a statement the logistical arrangements were being handled by courier company YTO Express, which had received the necessary regulatory approvals for the trial service.

In 2013, a Shanghai bakery was forced to scrap plans to deliver cakes by drone after a test flight sparked concerns over public safety and attracted the scrutiny of police, state media have reported.

Uber and Google: From partners to rivals

A Google spokesperson declined Tuesday to comment on the matter on which the company had earlier tweeted: "We think you'll find Uber and Lyft work quite well. We use them all the time."

Also a ride-share company, Lyft is Uber's direct competitor. It was Google's response to the announcement of Uber's partnership with Carnegie Mellon University for research and development work in mapping and autonomy technology, two areas in which Google has made significant progress.

The company that puts riders in touch with private car owners in cities worldwide announced the creation of the Uber Advanced Technologies Center in Pittsburgh on its blog.

Google has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Uber through its venture capital arm and its chief legal officer, David Drummond, is on the Uber board of directors.

According to media reports, Google too is planning to launch its own ride-hailing service in conjunction with its driver-less car project.

An anonymous source quoted by The Wall Street Journal said that reports that Google was developing an app to rival Uber had been blown out of proportion.

The products are presently imported and customised in the country, the company's CMD, Ajjay R Agarwal, told reporters here.

"We already have this set up of manufacturing since 2006. We were one of the biggest manufacturers of mobile accessories. So, we will start manufacturing of mobile phones in the same unit. We hardly require any additional investment because the infrastructure is ready which we are utilising to produce other electronic products," he said.

One lakh phones per day is the capacity at the moment, he said.

"Our (sales) target is about 1.5 million pieces a month for 2015-16," Agarwal said.

learn things unheard of catholicism

so if you are not getting married

unique temple in jaipur

Lollipop nibbles off 1.6 percent of Android devices

This is the first time that Lollipop has shown up on the Android Developers Dashboard since OS launched in last November. The Dashboard only shows Android versions with a share higher than 0.1 percent. Though a 1.6 percent share isn't a huge slice, it shows that mobile vendors and carriers have made some progress over the past month rolling out the new version.

Motorola was one of the first device makers to start pushing out Android 5.0 shortly after it was released. But the company is still working on expanding the roll-out to all of its devices across the world.

Among other Android versions, Jelly Bean rolled out in 2012. It still rules the market with a 44.5 percent share. But KitKat, that has debuted in 2013, is catching up with a 39.7 percent share.

Similarly, if you are a food lover, you can expect to see content from restaurants, food blogs and chefs.

Presently, Twitter offers you the option of syncing your contacts list so it can show you everyone who already has a feed. But in this system, you need to go through and select the people you really do wish  to follow. The company is now hoping to tackle this problem with the new feature that will instantly populate your Twitter feed with content derived from your contacts without following anyone.

However, there is no confirmation about its official launch. If sources are to be believed, it will be unveiled in a few months.
