Read more http://goo.gl/2X1hLa

Facebook's Moments app uses facial recognition technology to group photos

Tech News  "It's hard to get the photos your friends have taken of you, and everyone always insists on taking that same group shot with multiple phones to ensure they get a copy," product manager Will Ruben said in a blog post.

"When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you're in back. The same is true for smaller events too, like a kayak trip or a night out," Ruben said.

The new application allows users to create groups that sync photos to friends. Moments uses facial recognition technology to group photos based on the friends who are in them, similar to the "tagging" used by the Facebook social network.

The new app was launched Monday for users of Apple and Android handsets in the United States, and will be rolled out to other countries over time.

Unique lens turns smartphone into microscope

Tech News - It can magnify images by a magnitude of 120 -- all for just three cents (Rs.1.20) a lens.

"The lens attaches directly to a smartphone camera lens without the use of any additional device. It makes it ideal for use with younger students in the classroom," said Wei-Chuan Shih, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.

For the study, researchers captured images of a human skin-hair follicle histological slide with both the smartphone-PDMS system and an Olympus IX-70 microscope.

At a magnification of 120, the smartphone lens was comparable to the Olympus microscope at a magnification of 100 and software-based digital magnification could enhance it further, the team reported.

The lens is made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a polymer with the consistency of honey, dropped precisely on a preheated surface to cure.Lens curvature and magnification depends on how long and at what temperature the PDMS is heated.

The resulting lenses are flexible, similar to a soft contact lens, although they are thicker and
slightly smaller.

"Our lens can transform a smartphone camera into a microscope by simply attaching the lens without any supporting attachments or mechanism," the researchers wrote.

The strong, yet non-permanent adhesion between PDMS and glass allows the lens to be easily detached after use. It could also have clinical applications, allowing small or isolated clinics to share images with specialists located elsewhere.

Samsung's smartphone primacy under threat from Apple after weak Q4 results

The South Korean giant said earnings from smartphones and other mobile gadgets dropped 64 percent annually in the October-December period to 1.96 trillion won ($1.80 billion), contributing to its first annual earnings fall in three years.

It was the mobile division's fifth consecutive quarter of decline, in contrast to Apple's record-breaking 74.5 million iPhone sales in the three months to Dec 27 on the back of the success of its big-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Analysts say Samsung is under immense pressure to hang on to its market share, with a lot resting on the launch of its next  flagship Galaxy S6 high-end smartphone due around March.

While Samsung did not release smartphone sales figures, it said smartphone and tablet shipments declined in the fourth quarter, leading some analysts to declare Apple had caught up.

Mobile's share of Samsung's operating profit fell from almost 70 percent in 2013 to about 58 percent last year.

The company expects shipments and average selling prices for handsets to pick up in the first quarter following the launch of new mid-tier models like the Galaxy A.

When the smartphone is locked, kids can't "text, surf the internet, play games or look at Facebook", Sharon Standifird, the Texas-based app's creator, was quoted as saying in media reports."What they can do is call the parent back to get the password to unlock their phone," she added.

Rise of the car-sharing apps poses threat to auto sector

Investor sentiment is on a knife edge. Car sales are back in recovery mode in most major European markets, yet the fragility of the turnaround could yet be exposed by another economic slowdown while investors have flagged the potential danger posed by web-based services further down the road.

The rise of the likes of car hire app Zipcar and car-pooling rival BlaBlaCar are expected to present new challenges to mass-market carmakers such as Ford, GM, Volvo, Renault and Volkswagen while presenting fresh opportunities for existing rental networks.

Online taxi business Uber is another seeking a slice of the market with its UberPop operation, which links private drivers to passengers, though the U.S. company faces legal challenges in countries including France and Germany.

Cathie Wood, chief executive of ARK Investment Management, is among the growing band of investment professionals expecting a significant behavioural shift among the car-buying public.

"Thanks to web-enabled services like Zipcar, Uber and Lyft, household vehicles are beginning to feel like the stranded assets they are: high in cost but utilised on average only 4 percent of the time in a 24-hour day," she said.
