Gold-plated Apple Watch gets design patent

Tech News - The solid gold Watch Edition is the 18-Carat yellow or rose gold Apple Watch, which will cost at USD 13,000 in Canada. It also costs over some brand new cars.

Getting a design patent is an important step in protecting an invention. Apple's newly delivered patent means other companies cannot copy the design of its wearable. The Apple Watch's design is now officially protected by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

The design patent filing provides precious little information but includes several sketches showing the device from all angles, including from the top, side and underneath the face where the sensor and charging apparatus sit.

It doesn't, however, prevent other companies from delivering products that are similar but not identical in design. Competitors include a range of new or updated smartwatches from companies like Sony, Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, LG and Pebble. The Apple Watch's health-tracking capabilities also mean that consumers will be weighing it against fitness bands from the likes of Fitbit and Microsoft.

Apple watch defect: Users claim tattoos interfere in functioning of device

Tech News - Irked Apple fans have dubbed the issue "TattooGate" on Twitter, complaining they must choose between their body art and their stylish gadget. Apple, for its part, acknowledged the issue on its support website.

"Permanent or temporary changes to your skin, such as some tattoos, can also impact heart rate sensor performance," the site reads. "The ink, pattern, and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor, making it difficult to get reliable readings."

Several watch owners complained about the problem on social media this week, even posting videos that show the watch working well on an undecorated wrist, but repeatedly locking or pausing when worn on an arm with a tattoo. Some said it appeared the watch's screen-lock feature was triggering because the sensors thought the watch was not sitting on their wrist.

Middle class driving iPhone sales in emerging markets: Tim Cook

Tech News - Cook, under whom the California-based tech giant sold 61.2 million iPhones in January-March 2015, said emerging markets accounted for almost 40 percent of Apple's revenue for the second quarter.

  
Apple follows October-September period as fiscal year. On Monday, Apple had said that its net profit stood at USD 13.6 billion in the January-March quarter, while revenue was at USD 58 billion.
  
About 69 percent of the revenue came from international sales. Speaking at an investor call, Cook said "We also continue to see a reasonable percentage of first time buyers, particularly in some of the emerging markets.”

 "And if you look at emerging markets in general, revenue from emerging markets, just for the March quarter, was up 58 percent year on year. And a big piece of what is driving that is iPhone.
  
"Obviously, those results would have been higher without some of the FX (currency) headwinds..."
  
Apple chief further said: "And as I mentioned before, in emerging markets, we did extremely well. And so, I feel really good about where we are, and you can hopefully tell with the strong guidance that we provided, that we're very bullish on the current quarter as well."
  
Apple said 'swappers' -- who changed their last smartphone with an iPhone -- also contributed to the growth in iPhone sales.
  
To a separate query on iPhone purchases by the middle class in emerging markets, he said: "...And so as I look at that, without having market research data on the demographics that you are asking, it is clear to me that it has to come from the middle class.
  
"Because the upper income earners, there's only so many of those. And you cannot grow those kind of numbers without getting significantly into the middle class.

Apple set to release iMac 8K this year, says display partner LG

Tech News -  The LG's press release said, “Apple will get a much higher-resolution display in 2015.”

The release makes the picture clear that the Apple will launch its iMac 8K in 2015 and also that it would have “a much higher-resolution display.”

According to a media, the LG's release said, “As 8K is the highest resolution the human eye is capable of seeing, it will possibly overtake the market in the future.”

Apple iMac 8K, reportedly, will have a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, which is twice the resolution of a 4K screen and also four times the number of pixels. Also, LG has dubbed as 8K as 'quad ultra-high resolution'.

Apple planning own search engine to trump Google?

A media report on Monday, referred to an Apple job advertisement posted earlier this month, calling for a professional to develop "a search platform supporting hundreds of millions of users."

This has led to conjecture that the Cupertino, California-based tech giant Apple might be after Google's crown for the undisputed king of online search.

The advertisement has fuelled speculation that Apple was aiming to launch a standalone search tool across iPhones, iPads and Macs, the report said.

Back in 2010, analysts at investment banking and asset management company Piper Jaffray claimed that there was 70 percent chance of Apple launching its own mobile search engine by 2015.

In November last year, the Apple Insider reported that a web-crawling bot (a software application running automated tasks on the internet) was spotted on Apple's servers.

The rumours were bolstered that month when reports claimed that Apple was looking to ditch Google as its default search engine on its Safari browser.

Google has been the default engine on Safari for the past five years, but the deal is due to expire this year. Although this could see Microsoft's Bing or Yahoo taking its place, Apple could also be working to develop a search engine of its own.

Lenovo Sisley S90 launched at Rs, 19,990 in India

Lenovohad launched Sisley in China last year for CNY 1,999 (approximately Rs 20,000). Not just  a similar look to the iPhone 6, the Lenovo Sisley S90 promotional images on the web are almost identical to those which were used by Apple for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The Sisley S90 is 6.9mm thick and weighs 129 grams, exactly the same as the Apple iPhone 6.

The dual-SIM Lenovo Sisley S90 runs Android  4.4.4 KitKat and is upgradable to Android Lollipop. It features a 5-inch Super AMOLED HD (720x1280 pixels) display and packs a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor with Adreno 306 GPU and 1GB of RAM.

The new smartphone features a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and an 8-megapixel front facing camera. It is backed by a 2,300mAh battery.  Internal storage on the handset is 32GB, which is non-expandable via microSD card. Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G, Wi-Fi, GPS/ A-GPS, Bluetooth, NFC and FM radio.

Apple roars back to close smartphone gap with Samsung

Surveys released today showed the popular iPhone 6 and 6 Plus helped Apple pull to a virtual tie in the fourth quarter with Samsung, which has been the leader for the past three years.

The research firm Strategy Analytics said Apple and Samsung shipped 74.5 million smartphones each in the last three months of 2014 for a market share of just under 20 percent.

A separate survey by IDC analysts said Samsung had a tiny edge over Apple with 75.1 million units sold. Apple "beat everyone's expectations," said Ryan Reith at IDC.

Even more surprising is that Apple managed to increase the average selling price of its phones at a time when many consumers around the world are looking to low-cost handsets.

Another surprise was growth of iPhone sales in the US, "which is considered a saturated market," according to Reith, and in China, where competition is intense.

"Sustaining this growth and higher (selling prices) a year from now could prove challenging, but right now there is no question that Apple is leading the way," Reith said in a statement.

Samsung, which belatedly entered the market pioneered by Apple, had dethroned the US firm as the world's top smartphone vendor in the third quarter of 2011.

The South Korean electronics giant then went on to replace Nokia as the global leader in overall mobile phone sales in the first quarter of 2012.

Microsoft launches Outlook for rival iOS, Android

The move will allow users of iPhones, iPads and Android-powered smartphones and tablets to more easily access the email service popular with many businesses.
  
"The new Outlook app brings together the core tools you need to get things done -- your email, calendar, contacts and files -- helping you get more done even on the smallest screen," Microsoft said on its Outlook blog.
  
Microsoft under new chief executive Satya Nadella has been making moves to adapt to the new mobile landscape, with fewer customers using traditional PCs.
  
But with the Windows platform lagging in mobile, Microsoft has begun offering its software for rival operating systems. In November, it said it was making its Office software suite available free for iOS and Android.
  
The new Outlook app offers new features for mobile users, including a way to sort and filter important emails.
  
It offers a "focused inbox" which learns "about you and gets even more tailored to your priorities," the blog said.

Samsung's smartphone primacy under threat from Apple after weak Q4 results

The South Korean giant said earnings from smartphones and other mobile gadgets dropped 64 percent annually in the October-December period to 1.96 trillion won ($1.80 billion), contributing to its first annual earnings fall in three years.
             
It was the mobile division's fifth consecutive quarter of decline, in contrast to Apple's record-breaking 74.5 million iPhone sales in the three months to Dec 27 on the back of the success of its big-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
             
Analysts say Samsung is under immense pressure to hang on to its market share, with a lot resting on the launch of its next  flagship Galaxy S6 high-end smartphone due around March.

While Samsung did not release smartphone sales figures, it said smartphone and tablet shipments declined in the fourth quarter, leading some analysts to declare Apple had caught up.
             
Mobile's share of Samsung's operating profit fell from almost 70 percent in 2013 to about 58 percent last year.
             
The company expects shipments and average selling prices for handsets to pick up in the first quarter following the launch of new mid-tier models like the Galaxy A.

Cyber crooks scouting for vulnerabilities in Apple Pay: Report

Even though no actual attacks on Apple Pay have been reported yet, Trend Micro's 'Security Prediction for 2015 and Beyond' warned that cyber criminals will increase attacks on mobile payment systems.
  
"It's safe to assume that as early as now, the bad guys are already looking for vulnerabilities to exploit in Apple Pay. They will continue to scrutinise NFC (Near Field Communications) as well," Trend Micro said.
  
Apple Pay is a mobile payment and digital wallet service by Apple Inc. It lets certain Apple mobile devices make payments at retail and online checkout.
