Google launches security feature for Chrome web browser

Tech News -  The extension, called Password Alert, can be downloaded on Google Chrome and warns users before they enter account information on "phishing" pages, or imitation sites designed to steal passwords and access personal information, such as emails or online bank accounts.

Millions of phishing emails and websites are sent every day, Google said. Nearly 2 percent of messages sent through Gmail, Google's email service, are designed to steal passwords.

"Right now, it's left up to the user to decide whether or not to enter their password," said Drew Hintz, the lead engineer for Password Alert. "We expect users to know the difference between these sites, and that's an unreasonable request to make of users."

Some taptic engines supplied by Shenzhen, China-based AAC Technologies Holdings Inc started to break down over time, the Journal said, citing the people. The company is one of two suppliers of these components to Apple, it said.

Twitter pins ad revenue hopes on new partnership, acquisition

Tech News - Twitter was forced to cut prices for its new "direct response" ads, Chief Executive Officer Dick Costolo said on Tuesday after a the company issued a revenue warning for the year. Twitter shares fell 8.9 percent on Wednesday after dropping as much as 24 percent on Tuesday.

The ads, designed to get readers to click links to download an app or go to a company's web site, failed to deliver as promised. As a result, Twitter cut ad rates, impacting quarterly revenue by $4 million to $5 million, Costolo said.

"I don't think Twitter will realize its potential without being able to show advertisers more specifically what their performance on advertising is," said Colin Sebastian, senior analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co, who said the company's new deals show its willingness to adapt to advertisers' requests. "Twitter is a work in progress and clearly there's plenty of work left to do."

Twitter delivered disappointing first-quarter earnings on Tuesday, which were reported an hour early by financial data platform Selerity and sent the stock plummeting.

But it was not just the leak that traders punished. The San Francisco-based company also missed Wall Street revenue estimates by nearly $20 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S data. It recorded $436 million in revenue and said its key measure of monthly active user had slowed.

Key to improving advertising will be measuring who clicks on what. Costolo said a new partnership with Google's online advertisement service DoubleClick and the acquisition of marketing technology company TellApart, would help advertisers measure ad views, clicks and calculate investment returns.

Samsung tips higher second-quarter profit on Galaxy S6 sales

Tech News - Samsung's renewed focus on design after a period of stagnation in its smartphone range appears to be paying dividends, with researcher Strategy Analytics saying the South Korean giant overtook Apple Inc as the world's top smartphone maker in the first quarter.

"Galaxy S6 sales have been going as well as expected, while demand for the Galaxy S6 edge have been better than anticipated," Samsung Vice President Park Jin-young said during a conference call.

The firm reported a January-March operating profit of 6 trillion won ($5.64 billion), in line with the 5.9 trillion won profit it had guided for earlier this month and the highest in three quarters.

Earnings for April-June should continue to rise, it said, with the two Galaxy S6 models - featuring new design flourishes like metal bodies - likely to break the company's sales record.

Samsung shares have slipped in recent weeks on concerns that the Galaxy S6 phones, on sale since April 10, may not sell as well as first hoped.

Middle class driving iPhone sales in emerging markets: Tim Cook

Tech News - Cook, under whom the California-based tech giant sold 61.2 million iPhones in January-March 2015, said emerging markets accounted for almost 40 percent of Apple's revenue for the second quarter.

Apple follows October-September period as fiscal year. On Monday, Apple had said that its net profit stood at USD 13.6 billion in the January-March quarter, while revenue was at USD 58 billion.

About 69 percent of the revenue came from international sales. Speaking at an investor call, Cook said "We also continue to see a reasonable percentage of first time buyers, particularly in some of the emerging markets.”

"And if you look at emerging markets in general, revenue from emerging markets, just for the March quarter, was up 58 percent year on year. And a big piece of what is driving that is iPhone.

"Obviously, those results would have been higher without some of the FX (currency) headwinds..."

Apple chief further said: "And as I mentioned before, in emerging markets, we did extremely well. And so, I feel really good about where we are, and you can hopefully tell with the strong guidance that we provided, that we're very bullish on the current quarter as well."

Apple said 'swappers' -- who changed their last smartphone with an iPhone -- also contributed to the growth in iPhone sales.

To a separate query on iPhone purchases by the middle class in emerging markets, he said: "...And so as I look at that, without having market research data on the demographics that you are asking, it is clear to me that it has to come from the middle class.

"Because the upper income earners, there's only so many of those. And you cannot grow those kind of numbers without getting significantly into the middle class.

Tech News - Twitter is overhauling its safety policy and beefing up the team responsible for enforcing it, along with investing "heavily" in ways to detect and limit the reach of abusive content, general counsel Vijaya Gadde said in an column published by the Washington Post.

"We need to do a better job combating abuse without chilling or silencing speech," Gadde said. Twitter last month modified its rules to ban 'revenge porn' -- the tweeting of intimate or revealing pictures or video of people without their permission.

The San Francisco-based micro-blogging site is also taking steps to curtail the use of anonymously created Twitter accounts to intimidate or silence targeted people.

"We are changing our approach to this problem, in some ways that won't be readily apparent and in others that will be," Gadde said.

Twitter has tripled the size of the team responsible for protecting users of the service, resulting in a five-fold increase in the speed of response to complaints, according to the general counsel.

'NASA MESSENGER' spacecraft to crash into Mercury soon

Tech News - The "spacecraft will impact the planet at more than 8,750 miles per hour on the side of the planet facing away from Earth," NASA said in a statement on Thursday.

"Due to the expected location, engineers will be unable to view in real time the exact location of impact," a news agency reported.

Launched in August 2004, MESSENGER traveled 7.9 billion km on a journey that included 15 trips around the sun and flybys of Earth once, Venus twice and Mercury three times.

The spacecraft began orbiting Mercury in March 2011. The four- year mission was blessed with many scientific findings, including one in 2012 that provided compelling support for the hypothesis that Mercury harbors abundant frozen water and other volatile materials in its permanently shadowed polar craters.

It helped test many technological achievements, including the development of a vital heat-resistant and highly reflective ceramic cloth sunshade that isolated the spacecraft's instruments and electronics from direct solar radiation, vital to mission success given Mercury's proximity to the sun.

Samsung predicts record S6 sales will halt profit slide

Tech News - The Galaxy S6 is the sixth edition of the South Korean electronics giant's high-end, signature handset. Along with its curved-edge variant, the Galaxy S6 Edge, the S6 will hit stores at home and in some 20 countries, including the United States, China and Australia on Saturday.

Unveiled in March, the two phones have received rave reviews - fanning hopes of a big comeback for Samsung after the much-criticised Galaxy S5 largely flopped last year.

"Given the response from the market and clients ... we expect the S6 to set a sales record for all Galaxy models," Lee Sang-Chul, the vice head of Samsung's mobile unit, told reporters.

Samsung rarely discloses handset sales figures but the Galaxy S4 - released in 2013 - is known to have set the firm's sales record of 70 million units globally.

The firm suffered a dramatic slide in profits last year, hit by slowing demand in an increasingly saturated and competitive smartphone market that it had largely dominated since 2011.

The company struggled to fend off a double challenge from Apple in the high-end market and rising Chinese firms such as Lenovo and Xiaomi in the fast-growing mid and low-end markets.

Samsung hopes the S6 will re-establish it as the clear global smartphone market leader over Apple, which has enjoyed blockbuster sales of its iPhone 6, launched last September.

New Range Rover sets new standards in luxury

Tech News - The competition at the exclusive end of the market is about to step up a gear -- SUVs from Bentley and Rolls-Royce are both on their way, but for the moment, Land Rover has the segment to itself. So, with its latest luxury Range Rover -- the most exclusive and comfort-focused in the marque's history -- the company has done the sensible thing: redefine the benchmark.

Available in standard and long wheelbase forms and, for the first time ever, a 550PS supercharged V8 engine, the differences between the SVAutobiography and a standard mode are clear from the start. It boasts a two-tone exterior paint scheme as standard, features a unique front grille design, and even the lettering style on the badges is specific to the model.

However, it's what's inside that will be of the most importance to potential owners and if any of them already have a Rolls or a Bentley in the garage, the Range Rover's cabin will make them feel right at home. For example, the pedals and most of the switchgear has been machined from solid aluminum.

McLaren takes aim at Porsche with new baby supercar

Tech News - As such, the 570S, revealed on Tuesday ahead of the New York International Auto Show on April 2, is aimed directly at those who would ordinarily be debating whether to buy a Porsche 911 Turbo S or an Audi R8 V10 Plus. And, on paper at least, the baby McLaren is better than both.

As its name suggests, it has 570PS -- that's 562bhp -- on tap and, because it's built pretty much exclusively from carbon fiber and other exotic super-strong yet lightweight materials, it weighs just 1313kg, meaning it's lighter than any of its competitors and boasts a power to weight ratio of 428bhp per ton.

As for performance, those numbers translate into a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds, a 0-200km/h time of 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 328km/h (that's 204mph). But as Porsche continues to demonstrate, acceleration, speed and handling are only elements of a much larger equation in this segment; if the McLaren really wants to join this exclusive club, it also has to perform well in inner-city areas, on car parks and be an adequate long-distance cruiser.

Airtel launches platform for free access to certain smartphone apps

Tech News - "Akin to the established concept of toll-free voice calling, Airtel Zero will allow everyone from big marketers to small-time application developers to make parts or their entire mobile app free for customers – thus reviving interest of dormant customers, attracting new potential users and increasing retention," Airtel said in a statement.

The country's largest telecom operator said the platform is a compelling marketing tool for marketers as the application providers pay for customers’ data charges, thus giving customers toll-free access to their mobile application.

"From startups to enterprises, it is an open marketing platform that empowers companies ranging from small businesses 0to large conglomerates with an equal opportunity to reach out to customers in India," it added.

Mobile application makers need to register with Airtel Zero to give customers toll-free access to their apps and the company will inform the customers. The customers can then download the apps and access them at zero data charges.

"We believe that this platform is consistent with India's digital inclusion agenda and also contributes to government's 'Make in India' vision by providing a platform to millions of small businesses to reach out to the end consumer," Bharti Airtel (India)  Director (Consumer Business) Srini Gopalan said.

New iPhones help Apple surpass Xiaomi in China's smartphone market

Tech News - According to consumer research firm Kantar Worldpanel, the latest number for smartphone sales in China has Apple’s market share rising to 27.6 percent from the 25 percent in from December to February, 2015.

Apple’s overall share increased 9.7 percentage points year-over-year, surpassing local brand Xiaomi for the first time.

According to Kantar, China’s top three smartphones in the last three months ending February were the iPhone 6, followed by Xiaomi’s Redmi Note and then Apple again with the iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple plans to roll out around 20 new China stores by 2016, likely located in glitzy locations and rubbing shoulders with outlets for luxury brands such as Chanel and Hermes International SCA (HRMS.PA).

For Apple, brick-and-mortar stores help it maintain a premium image, from the product to in-store service and even packaging, allowing the firm to charge far higher prices than rivals - vital to its enviable profit margins.

Past data showed Apple outsold all other smartphone makers in China by units shipped in October-December 2014, making it the country's top seller for the first time.
