Hyundai Motor aims to have autonomous driving tech on market in 2020

Auto News - Car makers such as Mercedes and General Motors Co  as well as technology giants like Google Inc
and Apple Inc are already developing driverless vehicles which can complete whole journeys without human input.

But some analysts expect self-driving cars will not appear on global markets until the early- or mid-2020s, partly due to regulatory hurdles.

Hyundai Motor, like other automakers, already has autonomous features in premium vehicles like the Genesis, which can be programmed to hit the brakes when a pedestrian steps out.

GM's Cadillac CT6 tests strategy for taking fat out of big cars

Tech News - The CT6, to be unveiled ahead of the April 3-12 New York auto show, is an expensive car aimed more at boosting Cadillac's brand image than sales volume. Among the promised features is a system that will enable partly autonomous highway cruising.

But the CT6 could have a broader impact on GM's future products because of the way it is built. The car is the largest scale application of the company's new approach to using a mix of steel, aluminum and other materials to build vehicles light enough to meet tougher fuel efficiency standards, but big enough for customers who want spacious cars.

GM engineers are studying variations on the CT6's multi-material construction for at least four other future vehicle architectures and other models could be derived from the CT6's "Omega" architecture, Travis Hester, CT6's chief engineer, said in an interview.

Automakers are under pressure in the United States and China to dramatically increase fuel efficiency over the next decade to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But as oil prices tumble,
consumers in the world's two richest auto markets are paying premiums for luxury sedans and sport utility vehicles, not small cars.

Stream live video with new Twitter app

Tech News - Periscope would be competing with Meerkat - a similar app that came out a few weeks ago. Both apps are currently only available on the iPhone.

"I was watching a guy walking down the street in Paris and I was like, oh that's pretty cool. Look at the weather in Paris," CTV Ottawa quoted a female user as saying.

Many people wonder if Periscope will catch on in the long run. As what most people are streaming right now is "pretty boring".However, another user, a professor at the University of Ottawa's Telfer School of Business specialising in social media, felt the technology must be given some time.

He pointed out that other platforms, like YouTube, showed some pretty boring stuff at first. But then people started getting creative to attract more views.

"With this platform we may see something similar, creative livestreaming approaches that weren't possible before," the professor was quoted as saying.

Such new apps give people an opportunity to make more intimate connections. Family members, for example, can instantly share their vacations with people back home.

'Patent claims by foreign firms to hit mobile mfg plans'

The Indian Cellular Association has submitted the report to various government departments including telecom, electronics/IT and industrial policy, highlighting the case of Swedish firm Ericsson which has demanded 2 per cent royalty of total value of mobile phone from Indian firms.

"This in complete contrast to regimes such as China, where 0.019 per cent royalty can be charged and USA, where the Courts have directed 0.5-2 per cent royalties to be charged on the value of smallest saleable practicing unit which is royalty on chipset value and not on the phone value," it said.

The report added: "There can never be any manufacturing set up in India since the global giants have cartelized and self declared their patents and they would be charging these incredibly high rates only from the Indians and not from the international companies."

When contacted Ericsson India said in a statement that company's rates for patents have been validated in over 100 agreements that it has entered into with other companies in the ICT industry, including other handset manufacturers.

"In the unfortunate event that, after numerous discussions, a license agreement cannot be reached, Ericsson seeks to have the court determine the appropriate royalty rate that should be paid for Ericsson's patents," it said.

Ericsson has sued Micromax and Intex seeking royalty on some of its patent technology used in mobile phones sold by these firms. The company has also sued Chinese mobile phone company Xiaomi in India on patent issue.

The ICA report claims however that if royalty rates sought by Ericsson are levied on Indian mobile phone makers, then other global players will follow suit pushing up production cost by 100 per cent, making them the most expensive companies of the world, it added.

The report has urged government to ensure that the rights and interests of the Indian firms is protected and conducive environment created to encourage local manufacturing.

"The same is only possible if the environment and protection granted to companies in China is extended in India as well as otherwise the discriminatory conditions between China and India would kill any initiatives being taken by the Industry in India," the ICA report said.

Nissan to launch cheaper Datsun car in India to push sales

Auto News  - The unnamed small car will be launched within 18 months and be priced lower than Nissan's current cheapest model, the Datsun GO, which is sold for as little as 324,000 rupees (USD5,193), Guillame Sicard, president for Nissan India, said.

"It is a smaller car than the Datsun GO and will be more competitive," he said, without committing to a price. "It will be a cost-effective positioning."

Nissan showcased a concept compact car, Datsun Redi-GO, at the auto show in Delhi in 2014 and the new car is likely to be based on that, say analysts, who also expect the price to be significantly lower at below USD 4,000 for the no-frills, basic model.

India's ultra-low-cost car sector is dominated by market leader Maruti Suzuki which sells more than 30,000 such cars a month on average.

The Datsun car is based on a new platform produced jointly with Nissan's global alliance partner, French automaker Renault SA. It has been designed and engineered in India, a first for the companies, to meet the needs of local buyers.

Nissan expects to keep costs low by ensuring the platform and car are built using lighter materials and fewer components, also making it more fuel-efficient, said Sicard, adding there would be no compromise on quality and safety.

The resurrected Datsun brand was launched in India last year to boost Nissan's sales, especially in the low-cost segment.

"In the sedans, we have the full range from Eon to Elantra. However, we have only the Santa Fe in the premium SUV segment, which is one of the fastest growing segments in India. It's our endeavour to complete the range," Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) Rakesh Srivastava said.

Elaborating the company's strategy, he said the i20 Active will address the section at the lower end of customers, who are looking for a sporty and stylish vehicle.

"The i20 Active will be our 9th model in India and we are confident of getting a good response from the market," he said.

The i20 Active will compete with the likes of Toyota Etios Cross, Volkswagen Cross Polo and Fiat Avventura which are priced in the range of Rs 6.23 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

When asked about a model to fill the gap between its premium SUV Santa Fe and i20 Active, Srivastava declined to share details but said the company would plug that gap too.

Sources, however, said the company is set to introduce the ix25 SUV in India around August-September ahead of the festive season this year. This would then complete HMIL's range of SUVs in India.

Last month, the company had launched the new updated version of its mid-sized sedan Verna as part of plans to cross the 5 lakh sales milestone in India. HMIL had sold sold 4.11 lakh units last year.

Merc blends adrenaline with gourmet, haute couture in LuxeDrive

The German car major's domestic arm had sold 13 per cent more cars at 10,201 units in 2014, against its arch rival Audi's 10,851 units. The gap is just 650 units now for the Daimler group-owned Merc from Audi.

Tech News - With 15 new launches and 15 more dealership expansion this year, the brand Merc is on pace for the numero uno position, having already notched up 25 per cent spike in sales in the first two months of the year, say market watchers, as this comes against Audi's trimming its dealerships and being tight-lipped on its plans.

Merc lost its pole position to Audi, which entered the country only in 2007, in 2012 when it finished a distant third slot.

The domestic luxury car market, dominated by the three German brands -- Audi, Merc and BMW -- constitutes under 2 per cent of the total passenger vehicles volume currently, with around 30,000 units per year, but can grow around five times over the next decade, according to a PwC report.

The entry of the Tatas-owned JLR has also contributed to increased competition for the three German majors.

Already Merc has launched 3 models this year -- the CLA-Class the C 220 diesel and an upgraded version of A and B Class last week. A new dealership was opened in Jamshedpur last month.

New technology may double data capacity of networks

Tech News - Researchers have invented full-duplex radio integrated circuits (ICs) that can enable simultaneous transmission and reception at the same frequency in a wireless radio.

Up to now, this has been thought to be impossible: transmitters and receivers either work at different times or at the same time but at different frequencies.

The Columbia University team, led by Electrical Engineering Associate Professor Harish Krishnaswamy, is the first to demonstrate an IC that can accomplish this.

"This is a game-changer. By leveraging our new technology, networks can effectively double the frequency spectrum resources available for devices like smartphones and tablets," said Krishnaswamy.

In the era of Big Data, the current frequency spectrum crisis is one of the biggest challenges researchers are grappling with and it is clear that today's wireless networks will not be able to support tomorrow's data deluge, researchers said.

Today's standards, such as 4G/LTE, already support 40 different frequency bands, and there is no space left at radio frequencies for future expansion.

Tech News - The voice-calling can be activated by receiving a call from someone whose voice-calling is already activated. After you get the call, you need to close and then reopen the app. After that, instead of seeing the most recent chats, you will get three tabs namely Calls, Chats and Contacts. The call tab shows incoming, outgoing and missed calls at the precise times.

Other messenger apps which provides voice-calling facility are Hike, Viber, Line, Nanu, among others.
WhatsApp, which is attracting around 70 million monthly users, can add another edge to its user base in India with this add-on feature.

Android smartphone users will be able to use the feature and company has stayed any word on whether and when it will be released for iOS and other users.

WhatsApp's voice calling feature had went live a few times before but was quickly shutdown. Users will get to know if voice calling is active on their account if the main UI automatically gets updated which will feature three different tabs where one will be allocated for calls, a second for chats and a third for the contacts list.

Developers wrestle with making 'killer app' for Apple Watch

Tech News - While app makers are passionate about developing for the Apple Watch, some are skeptical about the prospects of coming up with a big idea for the little computer on a wrist that hits stores on April 24, said Markiyan Matsekh, product manager at software engineering firm Eleks.

A killer app that grabs consumers' attention will be key to the success of the Apple Watch and could spawn new companies, as the iPhone did. The photo-sharing app Instagram grew into a USD 1 billion business bought by Facebook Inc, and Snapchat has gone from a mobile messaging app to a company valued at USD 19 billion.

Apple has blocked some features, such as the gyroscope and accelerometer, on the development kit, and the watch simulator cannot test all functions, developers said. Apple declined to comment on why developers cannot access certain features.

"The limitations are discouraging," said Matsekh, who helped develop a Watch app to control a Tesla Model S without involvement from the electric carmaker. App designer Mark Rabo believes Apple is spurring creativity though restraint.

if a brother told me speaks river

Daimler still bullish about China amid BMW woes

Tech News  - Daimler and BMW expect higher sales in 2015, after reporting record deliveries and higher China sales in 2014. Carmakers are now grappling with a Chinese economy where the pace of car sales is slowing down after years of high double-digit gains.

Asked at the Detroit car show about sales momentum in China, Zetsche said, "I'm not seeing that brutal slowdown of growth. I see a pretty stable economic development."

Zetsche went out of his way to dismiss speculation that sales in China were under threat.

"Fears of a decline of the Chinese market have been around for 10 years. We still experience very strong dynamics in the market," Zetsche told reporters, adding that sales of the S-Class and E-Class were still very strong.

Asked whether volume gains in China can only be made at the cost of lower margins and prices, Zetsche said: "That's not what we experience. Of course there is a strong correlation between GDP and development of the car market."

Zetsche's remarks stand in sharp contrast to comments made by BMW late last week. "The market slowed down quite a lot in the last quarter," Ian Robertson, board member for sales and marketing said about sales in China.

Foreign carmakers are now facing calls by the China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) to shoulder some of the burden of lower profits. Last week, CADA took the unprecedented step of saying BMW had agreed to pay 5.1 billion yuan ($820 million) to dealers.

Overall, Zetsche sees strong momentum in other markets including the United States. "I see very few if any markets where we would see a reduction in demand," Zetsche said.
